Why did Sellafield Ltd - Business Improvement Central Team win LCS Organisation of the year?

The Central Business Improvement (BI) Team at Sellafield Ltd has been instrumental in embedding a culture of continuous improvement across the organisation. 

Comprised of highly qualified practitioners, trainers, and support staff, the team acts as internal consultants, building capability and enabling over 12,000 employees to adopt Lean principles. Their work spans operational areas, enabling functions, and the wider supply chain, ensuring improvement is integral to daily activities.
The team has delivered significant measurable impact: over 6,000 staff attended LCS 1a awareness courses, 145 gained LCS 1b accreditation, and 65 leaders completed the full Lean Leader programme, with many leading projects aligned to strategic objectives. Improvements include faster sign-off for projects, over 80 completed improvement projects, and widespread adoption of problem-solving and visual management techniques. Their initiatives have also ensured regulatory compliance and enhanced operational efficiency.

Judges highlighted the team’s outstanding influence on organisational culture, noting how they have created a shared understanding of value, promoted ownership of performance gaps, and linked improvement activities to strategic goals. The team’s facilitation of networks, workshops, and leadership programmes has established Sellafield as a benchmark for enterprise-wide continuous improvement, demonstrating both strategic impact and cultural transformation.
